Ocean Word Search: 60 Words From the Reef to the Deep Trench
This ocean word search covers the whole sea. There are sharks and whales, crabs and clams, the birds overhead, and the water itself: tides, waves and the deepest trench. Each New Puzzle draws a new set from 60 words, so every grid is different. It opens on Easy, where words only read across and down. Pick Hard to send them swimming backward and diagonally, or print a pack with an answer key.

🐟 Not Every "Fish" Is a Fish
Six words on the list end in FISH, and two of them are not fish at all. A jellyfish has no bones, no heart and no brain, and is closer to coral than to any fish. A starfish is not a fish either, which is why scientists prefer the name sea star. The other four, clownfish, pufferfish, swordfish and anglerfish, are real fish. So is the seahorse, even though it swims upright and looks nothing like one.
Going the other way, some animals that live like fish are mammals. Whales, dolphins and manatees breathe air and feed their babies milk. The orca, or killer whale, is actually the largest member of the dolphin family.
🐙 Strange but True
- An octopus has three hearts and blue blood.
- In seahorses, the father carries the eggs in a pouch until the babies hatch.
- The narwhal's long spiral tusk is a tooth that grows out through its upper lip.
- A clownfish lives among the stinging arms of an anemone. A coat of slime keeps it from being stung.
- Coral looks like rock or a plant, but a reef is built by tiny animals called polyps. A sponge is an animal too.
- The manatee, sometimes called a sea cow, has elephants as its closest living relatives.
- Some of the biggest animals eat some of the smallest. A blue whale can eat tons of krill, a tiny shrimp-like animal, in a single day.
🌊 The Water Words
A tide is the rise and fall of the sea, pulled mostly by the Moon's gravity, and most coasts get two high tides a day. The deepest trench anywhere is the Mariana Trench in the Pacific, nearly seven miles down at its lowest point. Down in the dark, the anglerfish dangles a glowing lure in front of its mouth to catch its dinner.
📏 Which Words Fit Which Board
Two-word names run together in the grid. Sand Dollar is SANDDOLLAR and Manta Ray is MANTARAY.
| Size | Words that can appear | Left out |
|---|---|---|
| Small 9 × 9 | 56 of 60 | Pufferfish, Anglerfish, Hammerhead, Sand Dollar |
| Medium 12 × 12 | All 60 | Nothing |
| Large 15 × 15 | All 60 | Nothing |
Seal hides inside Sea Lion (SEALION), so a puzzle never has both. You would find SEAL twice.
🔍 Tips: Beware the SEA Trap
Eight words on this list start with SEA: Seal, Sea Lion, Sea Otter, Sea Turtle, Sea Urchin, Seahorse, Seaweed and Seagull. When several of them share a board, the grid is full of S-E-A runs that lead nowhere, and the filler copies those letters too. So skip the SEA and hunt for the letters after it instead: the U of urchin, the T of turtle, the W of weed.
Double letters also stand out on this list: jeLLyfish, puFFerfish, seawEEd, EEl, kriLL, rEEf, cuRRent, lagOOn, haMMerhead, seaguLL and sheLL. The rare letters help too. Squid has the only Q, and Kelp, Krill, Shark and Plankton carry Ks. For the rarest-letter trick and how the levels work, see the main word search guide.
🐚 Ideas for the Classroom and Home
- Fish or not? On a printed sheet, circle the true fish in one color and the "fish" that aren't in another.
- Ocean zones: after the puzzle, sort the words into the sunny shallows, the open sea and the dark deep.
- Before an aquarium visit: print a pack and tick off each creature again when you see it in a tank.
