🍅 Which Vegetables Are Really Fruit?

To a botanist, a fruit is the part of a plant that grows from a flower and holds the seeds. By that rule, several of the "vegetables" on this list are fruit, among them the tomato, the cucumber, the pepper and the avocado. Cooks call them vegetables because they are not sweet. In 1893 the U.S. Supreme Court had to settle the question for a tax on imported vegetables, and ruled that a tomato counted as a vegetable, because that is how people eat it.

Berries are even stranger. A banana, a grape and a blueberry are all berries to a botanist, but a strawberry is not: its seeds sit on the outside. And the peanut is not a nut at all. It is a legume, in the same family as peas and beans, and its pods ripen underground.

🌎 Where These Foods Come From

Many foods on the list started far from where they are popular now. The potato was first grown in the Andes mountains of South America, and corn was first grown in Mexico thousands of years ago. Tomatoes and avocados come from the Americas too; the word avocado comes from ahuacatl, its name in Nahuatl, the language of the Aztecs. Sushi comes from Japan, dumplings are made in some form in kitchens from China to Poland, and the pizza as most people know it grew up in Naples, Italy.

Some names are little stories of their own. Spaghetti is Italian for "little strings". Burrito is Spanish for "little donkey". Sushi is named for its vinegared rice, not the fish. And the sandwich takes its name from John Montagu, the Earl of Sandwich, in 1700s England.

🍿 Pop quiz: why does popcorn pop? Each kernel holds a little water. Heated, the water turns to steam, the pressure builds until the hard shell bursts, and the soft inside puffs out.

📏 Which Words Fit Which Board

Most foods have short names, so this is the friendliest list on the site for small boards.

Large 15 × 15All 65Nothing

Two words hide inside others: Apple is in Pineapple, and Corn is in Popcorn. A puzzle never uses both words of a pair, so you will not find Apple twice.

🔍 Tips for This List

This menu is full of double letters: aPPle, cheRRy, caRRot, broCColi, pePPer, buTTer, chEEse, eGG, nOOdles, piZZa, waFFle, muFFin, cOOkie, jeLLy, meatbaLL, spagheTTi. Spot the pair, then check the letters around it. Two rare letters are worth a special look. The ordinary filler on this page never uses J or Z, so every J in the grid comes from Jelly and every Z from Pizza, either the word itself or a decoy copied from its letters. K is rare too: Pancake, Cupcake, Cookie and Cracker. The main word search guide explains why the rarest letter is the quickest one to hunt.
