Dinosaur Word Search: 58 Words, and Why the Names Need a Big Grid
This dinosaur word search mixes the famous names with the words for how we know about them: fossils, footprints, amber and the people who dig them up. Dinosaur names are long. The page opens on a Medium board at Easy, where words only run across and down, and the Large 15×15 board is the one that fits every name. Switch to Hard and even Velociraptor may be spelled backward, or print a pack with an answer key.

🦖 Three on the List Aren't Dinosaurs
Pteranodon flew over the dinosaurs, but it was a pterosaur, a flying reptile from a separate branch of the family tree. Plesiosaur and Mosasaur were sea reptiles. The mosasaurs were more closely related to today's lizards and snakes than to any dinosaur. They are on the list because they turn up in every dinosaur book and museum hall, and it is worth knowing the difference.
Archaeopteryx is the other way round. It lived about 150 million years ago, had feathers and wings but also teeth and a long bony tail, and was long called the earliest known bird. Since scientists count birds as living dinosaurs, the pigeon outside your window is closer kin to Tyrannosaurus than Pteranodon ever was.
🔤 What the Names Mean
The word dinosaur itself was coined by the British scientist Richard Owen in the early 1840s, from Greek words meaning "terrible lizard". Most of the names on this list are Greek or Latin descriptions too:
- Tyrannosaurus rex: "tyrant lizard king"
- Triceratops: "three-horned face"
- Stegosaurus: "roof lizard", from the plates on its back
- Velociraptor: "swift thief". The real one was about the size of a turkey and had feathers.
- Maiasaura: "good mother lizard". Its fossil nests, with babies still in them, were found in Montana.
⏳ A Lot of Time Between Them
The Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceous periods together span more than 150 million years, which makes "the age of dinosaurs" a very long age. Stegosaurus lived about 150 million years ago and Tyrannosaurus about 68 million years ago. That means there is more time between Stegosaurus and T. rex than between T. rex and you. It ended about 66 million years ago, when an asteroid hit what is now Mexico, and every dinosaur except the birds went extinct.
Names can change too. Brontosaurus was folded into Apatosaurus for about a century. Then, in 2015, a large study of their bones argued that it was different enough to have its name back. Both are on this list.
📏 Which Words Fit Which Board
This is the list where size matters most. Parasaurolophus is 15 letters and fills an entire row of a Large board.
| Size | Words that can appear | Left out |
|---|---|---|
| Small 9 × 9 | 34 of 58 | 24 words, including all but five of the dinosaur names |
| Medium 12 × 12 | 50 of 58 | Tyrannosaurus, Brachiosaurus, Parasaurolophus, Archaeopteryx, Compsognathus, Giganotosaurus, Protoceratops, Paleontologist |
| Large 15 × 15 | All 58 | Nothing |
On Small, the only dinosaur names short enough are Iguanodon, Oviraptor, Maiasaura, Troodon and Raptor. A Small board is mostly fossils, eggs and claws. Raptor also hides inside Velociraptor, Oviraptor and Microraptor, so a puzzle never pairs it with any of them.
🔍 Tips: Don't Hunt the SAURUS
Nine names on the list contain SAURUS, and four more contain SAUR. On a big board the grid is full of S-A-U-R runs, and most of them lead to the wrong dinosaur. Hunt the front of the name instead: the TYR of Tyrannosaurus, the ANK of Ankylosaurus, the BRA of Brachiosaurus.
The rare letters are a gift here. Archaeopteryx and Extinct carry the only Xs. V turns up only in Velociraptor, Oviraptor, Volcano and the three -vore words. Jurassic has the only J. Double letters stand out too: tyraNNosaurus, aLLosaurus, gaLLimimus, trOOdon, foSSil, juraSSic, triaSSic, eGG, tEEth and fOOtprint. More tricks are in the main word search guide.
🦴 Ideas for Dinosaur Fans
- Plant-eater or meat-eater: on a printed sheet, circle the herbivores in green and the carnivores in red. Stegosaurus, Triceratops and Brachiosaurus are green; Tyrannosaurus, Velociraptor and Allosaurus are red.
- Say it out loud: break the long names into chunks, like ANKY-LO-SAUR-US, before you hunt for them.
- Museum trip: print a pack and tick off each name again when you see its skeleton.
