If you love a good brain teaser as much as I do, you’re in for a treat! Matchstick puzzles are one of those classic challenges that have been around for ages but never seem to lose their charm. They’re simple, fun, and will have you scratching your head in the best way possible. In this article, I’ll walk you through some of my favorite matchstick puzzles—and yes, I’ve included the answers because, let’s face it, sometimes we all need a little help!
What Are Matchstick Puzzles?
Matchstick puzzles are exactly what they sound like—puzzles that use matchsticks to create shapes, equations, or patterns. The goal is often to move, add, or remove matchsticks to solve a problem. It’s a simple concept but don’t let that fool you; these puzzles can get surprisingly tricky. And the best part? You don’t even need actual matchsticks. Toothpicks, pens, or even your fingers will do in a pinch.
I have made a video with my favorite matchstick puzzles. If you enjoy puzzle questions of all different types then you should follow my YouTube channel (or other social channels) to get my latest puzzle questions.

Matchstick Puzzle #6: Change 100 into CAT
Answer
To solve this question you really have to think outside the box. Because the biggest step you need to make is to change the perspective that you are looking at the matches. Instead of looking a it from the bottom up, you must stand next to the number 1 and look at the matches sidewards.
From this perspective it becomes a lot easier to solve. Firstly move the right hand side match from the top 0, making it a C and place it vertically underneath the number 1 – forming the letter T. With the second 0, move the bottom match up slightly to form the letter A. And now you have changed 100 in CAT.
Matchstick Puzzle #7: Coin Inside the House
Answer
The two matchsticks forming the left side of the house are the two that don’t move. The other 3 matches move as shown in the image below.
